About the Forum
The New York City local of the Democratic Socialists of America will present a forum and educational event that explores the origins, nature, and consequences of the present economic and financial crisis, especially as the crisis affects the lives of working people in the metropolitan area. As more New Yorkers lose jobs and homes, as tax revenues decline, and as vital services are threatened with elimination, how will government, capital — international and local — the broad Left, and unorganized New Yorkers react? Are we fated to repeat the fiscal crisis of 1975? Will an opposition to austerity arise or just “drop dead”? What can socialists and activists do?
Join us for a discussion of strategies and tactics.
About the Speakers
Nomi Prins, a former managing director at Goldman Sachs, is currently a senior fellow at Demos. In her latest book, It Takes a Pillage: Behind the Bailouts, Bonuses, and Backroom Deals from Washington to Wall Street (Wiley, 2009), Prins exposes how the revolving door between Wall Street and Washington enabled and encouraged the disastrous behavior of large investment banks. She introduces readers to the machinations of the Pillage People: the men who funneled trillions of dollars directly to the banks and the executives whose companies drained the American economy.
Doug Henwood, publisher of Left Business Observer, is also a contributing editor of The Nation and has a weekly program on WBAI radio, Behind the News. He is the author of Wall Street (Verso, 1997), After the New Economy (New Press, 2004), and at work on a book on the American ruling class.
Joseph Schwartz, teaches political theory at Temple University. He serves on the National Political Committee of the Democratic Socialists of America and on the executive committee of the faculty and professional staff union, the Temple Association of University Professionals (AFT). His most recent book is The Future of Democratic Equality: Rebuilding Social Solidarity in a Fragmented America.
